Dental Treatment

The phrase “dental treatment” is a pair of words which encompasses a wide range of dental care procedures. Let’s learn what lies behind this phrase. The first area we’ll meet is conservative dental care.

Essentially, in most cases when we discuss dentistry, we are referring to conservative dental care. The truth is that when we are careful about proper maintenance of the mouth – brushing our teeth and cleaning with floss, and routine visits to the dentist and dental hygienist, we are performing the best conservative treatment possible for our mouth. On the other hand, the treatments performed by the dentist which fall into the conservative dental care category are the following:
Treatment of caries in the teeth – Caries is the primary problem treated in conservative dental care.
What in fact is caries? Caries is a disease affecting the hard dental tissues. Caries does not distinguish between religion, gender or race, and its bacteria indiscriminately harm any creature with teeth in the world.

What we don’t know about caries is that locating it during the preliminary stage enables treatment within the tooth enamel and prevents it from advancing further. Only after the caries has expanded from the tooth’s enamel layer do we begin a filling treatment. It is important to know that there are various factors which increase the exposure to caries. Of course, the degree of preservation and treatment of the tooth itself, the shape of the tooth – whether it is smooth or has jags and cracks which traces of food could stick to and cause problems, the location of the tooth, the dental arch, and the tooth’s proximity to the salivary glands are all factors which influence the degree of exposure to caries. Chewing habits also have a strong influence, as well as improper positioning of a tooth in the dental arch.

Treatments characteristic of conservative dental care are:

Root Canal and Filling Treatments

When caries develop and invade the tooth enamel, a cavity is formed. In order to preserve oral health in general and the tooth’s health in particular, it is very important to treat this cavity by removing the dental tissues affected by the caries and to restore the tooth. This ensures that the tooth is once again strong and will not be affected again. As in any other case in medicine, early discovery of the cavity is significant to the degree of complexity of the treatment. In the simple cases, the treatment is performed in just one appointment, is quick and does not require anesthetics. In complex cases, a root canal treatment and even crowns may be necessary.
Pulpitis is the inflammation of the bundle of nerves and blood vessels which sustain the tooth, and is the reason why a root canal treatment is sometimes needed. This nervous bundle is called pulp and is found within the tooth, hence the name. The primary cause of pulpitis is neglected caries. When only a thin layer of dental tissue remains between the caries and the pulp, toxic substances excreted from the bacteria penetrate the nerve and blood vessels and cause inflammation. This inflammation, over time, is the cause of the strong tooth pain, and in order to treat the problem effectively, we must reach the root of the problem – literally and figuratively!

Maintaining Hygiene – Cleaning Calculus and Dental Plaque

The teeth aren’t the only part of the mouth that must be protected. The sensitive gingiva can also be the cause of an infinite number of problems for any average person. Every day, bacteria accumulate on our teeth and create a sticky, colorless film called plaque. Over time, if the plaque is not removed, it turns into calculus. The bacteria inside the plaque cause bacterial aggravation which renders a local reaction of inflamed gums. This inflammation damages the strength of the teeth and could cause gingival recession and many other problems.

Where conservative dental care ends, oral rehabilitation dental treatments step in. In cases of complex fillings, sometimes the tooth loses some of its resilience and needs to be strengthened with a crown to protect it. Sometimes, the price of negligence is tooth loss. There are cases of falls or diseases which cause massive tooth loss. Today, with the heightened awareness of aesthetics and quality of life, the solution is to once again attain a healthy mouth that is filled with teeth – this is oral rehabilitation.

When extractions are performed and teeth are missing from the mouth, it is important to rehabilitate the mouth in order to continue a normal lifestyle. One of the solutions to restore the mouth to a healthy state is dental implants. Essentially, this is a process in which a metal screw is inserted in the jaw, upon which a crown is attached to replace the missing tooth. Until recently, oral rehabilitation with implants meant a great time investment and complex recuperation, but the All on 4-6 method, which only a few dentists in Israel practice, enables complete oral rehabilitation covering a small or extensive area within a short period of time, with relatively easy recuperation. It is important to know that the reasons for extraction are not always linked to caries. Sometimes, the reason is a lack of space in the mouth for wisdom teeth to erupt, and sometimes, the reason is advanced periodontic disease. In other cases, teeth must be extracted in order to align the bite and organize the teeth, in which case, of course, there is no need for implants.

Dental Aesthetics – In our world, there are the things you are born with and can’t change, and the things that it is possible and even worthwhile to improve and change. One of these things is aesthetic dental treatments. The field of orthodontics, which was in the past associated with teenagers, is today becoming popular among adults. There are a few methods, from with those in which the braces cannot be seen to braces with colorful rubber bands, for those interested. Beside for the improved aesthetic look that is apparent to the eye, they also achieve a healthier mouth, because after the alignment, there are no more spaces in the mouth which cannot be reached and cleaned, which prevents bacteria from accumulating and damaging.

Another area which has advanced in the last decade is teeth whitening. If in the past, this was a treatment for Hollywood stars or the rich alone, today it has become one of the relatively common treatments. There are two primary treatment methods, one performed at the clinic by the dentist, and the second at home. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. In general, the treatment at the clinic is quicker but last for a shorter time, while the second takes longer but lasts accordingly.

In conclusion, in any case of dental treatment, simple or complex, the importance of going to an experienced dentist at an established dental clinic is clear to everyone. It’s almost critical that the dentist treating you be knowledgeable and experienced in the treatment he is about to perform upon you. Compromising on quality or safety when choosing a dentist means risking unnecessary complications. Especially regarding dentistry, experience is the best teacher, and in order that your experience be a positive one, don’t compromise.
